Are you a fan of travel toiletry bags? I sure am!

For those people who can grab a bag - any bag (even a sack) and throw a toothbrush, razor, Q-tip, dental floss, and toothpaste, into it and run out the door ready for their weekend getaway, you have my applause.

That kind of thing always made me crazy. It's disorganized and inefficient for me and I forgive myself for that (teeny weenie anal) part of myself that can annoy other people. Like people in a hurry to get out the door.

But in my defense, haven't you ever been on vacation and left your favorite shampoo at home? Me too, but the chances of that happening go down to practically nothing when I use my travel toiletry bag.

Getting my first kids travel bag was a rite of passage in our home. It meant that you had cool stuff to take with you when you stayed overnight somewhere. It also meant that you didn't have to be humiliated by a sack of girls things your mom put together for you.

I was thrilled with my first travel bag. Mom got us travel toilet bags when we were each 12-years-old. It became a custom for us with our nieces and nephews when they turned 12. And, they love all the special things that go in them - just for them!

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didnt do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. Mark Twain

When we began traveling I was terrified of flying. I left sweaty palm prints on my lap whenever there was a take-off or landing. I have since learned that white wine takes the jitters off.

Tequila, however does things to you that have no business demonstrating on an airplane - especially amongst grandparents, children, teens and babies!

I don't know how to pack without my toiletry bag. In fact, I have one of each of these just to cover all my bases!

Don't Forget These Tips on How to pack a toiletry bag -

  • Combination locks - avoid keys and use a combination lock you take with you-for overnight luggage check places-avoid losing lock keys that might become lost.
  • Quart or liter size clear plastic bag for your 3 oz plastic bottles sets- liquids go in to and are TSA approved.
  • Moist Wipes
  • toilet paper - collapse the cardboard tube inside for easier packing
  • Hairbands and clips
  • Keep things organized - compartmentalized - use makeup kits you can toss
  • 3-oz travel bottle sets
  • aspirin, burn gel, bug spray, days of medication - 5 days gone, only bring 5 meds.
  • shampoo, soap (3 in 1 - shampoo, conditioner, body soap)
  • deodorant, Q-tips, mouth wash, toothpaste, moisturizing gel - closeable tops, not products with pumps. I lost a great bottle of vodka that way once - it was held hostage to my hand lotion.
  • memory chips for camera, camera Battery charger, underwater camera, extra film, disposable cameras.
  • small, trial size lint roller, cell phone cords to recharge with - but seriously thik about leaving the phone at home.
  • Sunglasses.

  • The way I look at it is that you have these choices:

1 - Travel Toiletry Bags

If you are the kind of person who needs to pack the kitchen sink AND the entire bathroom - plus extra, then you'll be glad to know that the sizes and varieties of these bags come in a variety of choices.

There are even travel toiletry bags that expand if you need more room - Who could have imagined THAT!!

2 - Hanging Travel Toiletry Bags

These are so neat! They come in designs that let you hang them up to use as mini drying racks, extra hanging devices, and shower or jewelry options. I have never showered with my hanging toiletry bag, but I know there is one in my closet that is waterproof for this exact reason.

When I started taking scuba diving lessons I thought I needed to get all waterproof luggage. I should have realized immediately that I wasn't staying UNDER the water . . .

3 - Cosmetic Cases

OK girls, you can NEVER have too many of these - sorted by size and 'department' (eyes, face, lips, cheeks , and any other geographic region on yourself that you believe needs its own bag!)

4 - TSA-Friendly Travel Toiletry Bags

Oh they are so ugly, but nowadays you are not allowed to live without them. The new clear toiletry bags are so cute, though. But, beating the looks of the zip lock plastic bag isn't tough!

5 - Men's Travel Toiletry Bag

I pack for my husband so all the lotions that don't go in my bags - that he uses- end up in his as a secondary toiletry bag.

He loves the leather ones because he leaves off the cap on the shaving lotion and we have made many a trip home to find his toothpaste and shaving lotion sharing a toothbrush together!

If I go for brands, I go to the pricier ones and the best reputation ones. I know how the luggage gets tossed around and I hate replacing things like this. Leather choices are timeless and durable and sturdy. These three options are important to look at!

The adage that you get what you pay for is certainly true here! Samsonite, is our family favorite and has been since I was a young girl, but I know that Prada has a beautiful selection, as well as the other choices at ebags, where we shop for our travel toiletry bags.

Fantastic. I was so overly organized even as a young teen, I made lists of everything to pack for any trip: - which bag it went into, with every event carefully planned out in wardrobe, every detail. Of course, the toiletries were carefully planned as well.

Nowadays, the security restrictions on what one can take on flights really makes it critical to plan carefully. I haven't traveled that much in these times, but when I did, I was just as exacting.

Your hub is great! What checklists for anyone to build from! Thank you!

mwatkins 23 months ago

Thanks, Nellianna! I think part of the excitement of going on a trip is getting ready for it! I'm always so happy to go and about 48 hours before we are supposed to leave, I get excited about coming home. There's no place like home to rest a weary head!

heha my neighbors here are very interested in this. They bought luggage just for taking to their new cabin they bought a couple years back and is now finished. Besides using it all for travel they have luggage just for the lake and now this is just what they need to finish it off. They are so tickled with it they asked me to thank you for them.

thnx ; )

mwatkins 23 months ago

That's GREAT baggz, Thank you too! I went on a cruise once and took all my bags. It's such a diverse way to travel, with so much to do and see and different activities all in one that I needed more choices. So glad you stopped!

Winsome 23 months ago

Wow MW, very comprehensive, thank you. You might add a charger for your camera battery to your list. Vacations take a lot of battery time. I'm still trying to figure out how you lost a bottle of Vodka to hand lotion. =:)

mwatkins 23 months ago

Hi Winsome - Thanks for the tip! Noted and included! The hand lotion was a hand pump that was jarred in the transfer of luggage and lotion was all over the inside of the bag. The vodka bottle also had a loose cap. I get so nervous when I fly that I have 2 drinks before I board a plane. For some reason take off and landing just terrify me. Since a therapist costs as much as a vacation, I use vodka instead, take the vacation and get myself prepped for flight - That's how I do it, but I'm sure an iPod and soothing music may have the same affect if I closed my eyes and meditated instead. But I don't want to take that chance. ;-)

abonded4life 22 months ago

Love the checklist! Thanks

mwatkins 22 months ago

LOL - thanks, abonded4life4! It goes with me on every trip and is taped to the side of our closet where only I can see it! That way, we all know what to put in our bags! ;-)

Skin Care Beauty 22 months ago

Very cute hub and so many bags to choose from!

mwatkins 22 months ago

Hi Skin Care Beauty - Thank you for stopping by! I'm glad to see you here! Yes, but choices are good!

jtrader 18 months ago

Good choices. I wouldn't include all these things because I like to travel light.

mwatkins 18 months ago

Hi jtrader - Thanks for stopping! I remember travelling light - but it was about 25 years ago ;-) Seems like all I needed to just get up and "Go" back then was a toothbrush and clean underwear. And, I was even willing to compromise on those because I knew I could get them wherever I was going to. ;-)
