When you are buying a used Mobility Scooter, you'll want to keep a few things in mind in your search. Because mobility scooters are expensive, you'll want to be sure to follow these simple guidelines.

• The first thing you want to do is take to your time with the buying process. Do not get in a hurry to get 'just anything,' or jump to purchase the first one you see or look at.
• Make sure that if you buy a used mobility scooter that you have a refund option in case you don't like it or want to return it for any reason. Auctions are not the best place to buy a used mobility scooter. Too many people get one home to find out that there is no warranty, an expired or limited warranty, or a no return policy.

• If you buy a mobility scooter that has not been used properly or not stored correctly then you may experience problems with the electronic controller and your brakes run the risk of seizing up on you. Also the main parts in the controls are easily damaged and your 'new' used mobility scooter may only last for your test drive.

• If you want to take your used mobility scooter on the road as well as the sidewalk then you need to call the department of motor vehicles and ask what they approve for that and you'll have to meet those requirements in case you are stopped. If you do not check and you are not in compliance with the requirements then you will be pulled over like a motorist and ticketed as f you were operating a motorcycle or car. For instance, you need to know if there is a minimum speed that your used mobility scooter has to operate at for road use - 10 mph, and Class 1 or 2, for example. You'll also want to know what kind of lights and mirrors and reflective devices are required and if your used mobility scooter is equipped for the road adequately-or not.

• As with all things, batteries only perform at peak level for a certain time frame. Make sure your used mobility scooter can pull you (your weight) up a slight incline and that it can go the speed you need it to without quitting on you. Take a test drive!
• Mobility scooters - especially used mobility scooters are truly not created for indoor AND outdoor use. They are either one or the other, but not both. For both indoor and outdoor uses, you'll want to look at electric wheel chairs instead.
• Remember that your height and weight should be considered for comfort reasons when you buy a used - or new - mobility scooter.
