What is one of the very first things you notice about changing seasons?

  • Birds Singing

Outdoor Bird Feeders help usher in that sound by giving birds of all kinds a place to rest and nest. The variety of birds and outdoor bird feeders is unlimited.

Choices include, but are not limited to: garden bird feeders, humming bird feeders, outdoor bird feeders, window feeders, squirrel feeders, glass, metal, wood bird feeders, wild bird feeders, bird feeding stations and squirrel proof bird feeders.

We are fanatics to have birds singing near us. If the birds aren't there when we get there then they will be by the time we leave. Our last home had low hanging branches and squirrels were a problem. We walked outside to a symphony every day.

We (thought we) solved the problem partially by giving the squirrels a squngee to eat. The squngee was secured to the bottom of the tree so the birds were left to themselves in their outdoor bird feeders.

Outdoor Bird Feeders-And Squirrels

We had created a monster, but, once all the bird feeding and squirrel proofing was done then we realized that squirrels are pigs and had to implement a second device to keep them away from the outdoor bird feeders and help prevent their stealing bird seeds and interfering with the birds themselves.

We went through two-ten pound bags of bird seed before we came up with the only thing that really worked - We coated the tree branch with brake grease so that once a squirrel landed on the branch, they just kept zipping along. Ours was a successful method, but a messy idea.

My husband declared war on the squirrels and wrapped the branch holding the outdoor bird feeders in isolative tape first so that none of the tree branch was exposed to brake grease - just the underside of any squirrels belly who dared to walk 'the walk.'

We watched many a squirrel jump on that branch with the outdoor bird feeder on it and skate along until they were destined to literally come flying out of that tree as if they were playing cops and robbers looking for their getaway car!

Outdoor Bird Feeders Gone Bad

Outdoor Bird Feeders Attract Best of The Birds!

Wooden Bird feeders have the most natural look in a yard. Since they blend in better with nature because of the way they look, smell and the materials, you get a wider, larger, and wilder variety of birds visiting your outdoor bird feeders.

Color also attracts yet even more birds - hummingbirds will find a red hummingbird feeder faster than any other feeder. So, if you have a garden or window bird feeder you'll get different birds visiting you simply because you have color - flowers for instance - in those areas versus trees and shrubs.

Glass and metal bird feeders work best in a sanctuary with less wind - to prevent breakage and damage to flowers, gardens, young plants and bare feet.

Guard against cat invasions to your outdoor bird houses by hanging them up high enough and out far enough so that you can still get to it to replace bird seed when it runs out, but also so that cats have a tough time maneuvering to the bird houses by way of the branch you hang them on.

Outdoor Bird Feeders-Birds & Flowers

Take some time to find out what kinds of birds and flowers are populated in your area so that you know what type of flowers and plants to plant to attract your favorite bird species - for your areas habitat.

You'll also find out what time to plant so that your outdoor bird houses attract a variety of vocals for each changing season.

To find this information you'll find a USA Map that includes a separate site listing for each state and also a listing for your local cooperative extension office here: http://www.csrees.usda.gov/Extension/

"The Cooperative Extension System is a nationwide, non-credit educational network. Each U.S. state and territory has a state office at its land-grant university and a network of local or regional offices. These offices are staffed by one or more experts who provide useful, practical, and research-based information." " NIFA (National Institute of Food and Agriculture) is the federal partner in the Cooperative Extension System," . . . NIFA provides valuable information that includes both plants and animals. Ta da!

Very cool hub and the timing is great MW. Haha..that video is great. Squirrels are miniature pigs. Keeping them away from the feeders is real tricky.

Thanks, Sheila B! It's the one thing that we just really love about changing seasons! Right past our window every day is a bird migration that lasts about four hours between 4 am 8 pm. When we can open the window in the summer, they actually will come right up to the windowsill - So ;-)!

Hi Kowality! - Squirrels are stinkers - Very creative with their quest to steal bird seed! Watching them try to get off that slick branch was hilarious! Better than a miniature skateboarding squirrel! And they never gave up trying either, so it was a nightly show!

Excellent article, Michelle!! Thanks. I may get courage to try to outfox the squirrels (first must get them out of the attic!) - One is so sassy he will sit on a branch and talk back to me! :-| Well - right now, they're busy - ahem - chasing each other. But I'm praying for hot enough weather now that they can't bear the attic. Then I must get some repair work done.

Thanks, Rlfalsetto - Birds make our house feel like home!

Hi Nellieanna-Squirrels are stubborn, aren't they - once they find a 'fertile' area they like to stay as long as they can - and they will use intimidation (even though they are small) like chatter and some will even get close to you in a stance that says, "This is MY yard (attic). But we love the birds in the yard! It was my husband who took the initiative to get bird feeders so we had more birds. I'll never forget the look on his face when he brought home our first hummingbird feeder and filled it with a honey mixture that worked for a window planter we had - immediately. Cats can be nearly as big a problem, but they are easier shooed away.

w0w great information here. I always welcome birds and bird feeders. Long as they are done right and don't promote a mess and other critters going after their food I leave for them. Like I was saying, there is some great ideas to thwart that here. heheh

thnx for this hub, as it is spring I have some bird feeder issues and this answers several of those issues.

Hi tonymac and thank you! Sometimes it takes some tweaking of bird feed and surrounding plant and flower choices to hear the melodious symphony we seek. I sat outside to make a vid one day and the birds sang over the top of my voice. I loved it, but it came out hysterical!

Very informative hub. Attracting birds to your garden with feeders is very simple and you'll get hours of pleasure watching them feed.

Hi britishbirdlover! Thank you for stopping - I could not agree with you more! Bird feeders can be especially good for people who are house-bound or who have mobility issues. Everyone, though, will benefit from the way birds help with insects i their garden! But the world benefits from a song!
